REFLECT: The Week I Learned Stress Isn’t the Enemy

August 10, 20252 min read

"Within you, there is a stillness and a sanctuary to which you can retreat at any time and be yourself." — Hermann Hesse

For much of my life, I thought that stress was something I had to remove from my life; I thought it was bad and that I had to avoid it at all costs to be well.

I did all the things, yoga, meditation, and I took all the latest supplements that were the new ‘in trend’ to help us do it all, I always fell for all the “this will really change your life” marketing. To be honest with you, some things I still do, girl maths right?! And you can certainly never have enough active wear.

The Week I Learned Stress Isn’t the Enemy

Here’s the thing that we have missed: it's not about avoiding stress, as science points out, it's more about how we teach our bodies to recover from it.

Your nervous system was designed to face stress (some stress is actually good for us). What it wasn’t designed for? Living in permanent fight-or-flight mode.

That consistent state of being alert, wondering what's going to happen next, the low-key tension in your shoulders, the racing thoughts at night, even the craving for sugar or wine after a long day. It's your body trying to regulate to get back to a sense of balance after thinking it was about to be attacked.

To be able to change this, we need to work with our stress responses rather than fighting them; this is when everything shifts.

Short, intentional movement helped me burn off adrenaline.

Breathwork rebalanced my nervous system in minutes.

Saying “no” without guilt gave me space to reset.

What if instead of shaming yourself for being stressed… You honoured the signals and gave your body what it actually needs?

  1. Try 3 minutes of box breathing (inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4).

  2. Take one 10-minute walk after a stressful moment to reset.

  3. Journal: What’s one small thing I can release from my “to-do” list this week?

Affirmation of the week:

“I am not my stress. I am being kind to myself and giving my mind and body what they need.”

REAL TALK:

What if wellness isn’t about being calm all the time? What if it’s about being able to return to calm quicker each time?

Your power isn’t in avoiding stress; it’s in how you come back from it each time.
