The Week I Realised “Fun” Was Just a Costume

REFLECT: The Week I Realised “Fun” Was Just a Costume

“The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.” — Carl Jung

Let’s be honest, I’ve always been pretty out there, I was always the life of the party, laughed loud, had so many wild stories and brunches that turned into messy full weekends. Where I wore “hair of the dog” like a badge of honour.

But secretly I was exhausted, stuck in a vicious cycle of not getting anywhere and not being true to myself.

I wasn't just physically run down, I was mentally and emotionally run down too. I was chasing connection, connection to myself and to others - yet every morning I woke up feeling a deeper disconnect from everything.

Yeah sure the drink gave me confidence, at times it made me feel like I was on top of the world. In fact I used to say it was the only time I felt like me, it made me feel limitless, it allowed me to stop feeling like I was putting on a mask, it allowed me to let go.

This wasnt fun, this was a mask, a mask I’d been wearing for so long that I didnt even realise it was a mask. I thought it was who I was, I thought alcohol made me.

What I didn’t realise was the actual impact it was having on me, it gave me shame, guilt, major hangxiety and deep sense of sadness and a void that nothing seemed to be able to fill. Every week, over and over I would question my existence, I questioned whether the world would be better off without me.

It wasn’t until I had the strength to remove the mask that I found something magical, someone better underneath. Someone real. Someone radiant and someone so beautiful it filled me with pure joy - I found me.

I found her, she dances like no one is watching, without a glass in her hand, she loves to laugh and sing loudly and doesn't care who hears.

Maybe you're feeling something similar, like she is there, whispering to you… “your ready, now is your time to boldly step on to that stage and shine bright.

🔥 RISE: Your Weekly Glow-Up Check-In

This week’s power move: Protect your energy like it’s your job.

Here’s your 3-step challenge:

  1. Say no to one thing that doesn’t light you up. (Yes, even if it’s bottomless brunch)

  2. Say yes to one thing that moves you forward. (Stretch. Journal. Reach out.)

  3. Remind yourself daily: You are not boring without booze. You are becoming magnetic.

Save this affirmation:

“I don’t need alcohol to sparkle. I am the whole damn mirror ball.”

✨ REAL TALK:

What would change if you gave yourself permission to outgrow your old identity?

Go journal it. Go voice note it. Or just go sit with it.

Change doesn’t happen in big moments, it happens in small truths, repeated often.
